City Prepares for America Recycles Day, Encourages Recycling

CINCINNATI (October 12, 2021) – Last week, in partnership with Rumpke and the City of Cincinnati’s Office of Environment & Sustainability, Downtown Cincinnati deployed 20 new recycling cans throughout the Central Business District.

The new receptacles will collect empty bottles, cans and cartons to be sent to Rumpke’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in St. Bernard. This is a single-stream recycling facility, which means all recyclables can be combined in one container and are sorted at the facility. Sorted items are shipped to manufacturers and recycled into something new.

In advance of America Recycles Day on November 15, Downtown Cincinnati will encourage visitors and residents to recycle their discarded bottles, cans and cartons in any of these bins in order to see how much we’re able to recycle together. Help us collect items that can be recycled to create everything from packaging to jewelry and apparel.

While you’re recycling, you can “vote” for some of your Cincinnati favorites. Select cans will be divided into two halves, where you can cast your vote by placing your recyclable item on the side of your choosing. Check specific cans to select XU or UC; Skyline or Gold Star; Paul Brown Stadium or Great American Ballpark; and more!

For Downtown businesses looking to start a recycling program, email us to sign up for more information on Hamilton County R3source’s programs, or learn more about obtaining a 513Green Workplace Certification and be entered into a drawing to win a donation to the Downtown charity of your choice! Downtown Cincinnati will select a winner on America Recycles Day to receive $500 donated on your behalf to a Downtown-based charity. Some local businesses that are already working with Hamilton County R3source to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability include Simply Zero, Rhinegeist and Over-the-Rhine Community Housing.

  • If you’re interested in supporting sustainable shops and curating your own collection of sustainable goods, Simply Zero and Koko are two zero-waste stores located Downtown.
